The Maryborough District Cricket Association (MDCA)’s under 14 Just For Girls Country Week got underway on Sunday, with games at Muckleford and Newstead.
While the scoreboard showed two losses in the end, there were personal improvements throughout the day as the MDCA showed improvements in being able to hold their wicket throughout their innings.
The MDCA’s opening game was against Gisborne Green at Muckleford, and a well-drilled Gisborne Green team were able to take wickets throughout the innings.
The one constant for the MDCA was Arabella Koop, who led from the front to score 12 off 14 deliveries, as Maryborough finished on 32.
It took six overs for Gisborne Green to eventually reach the target, but the MDCA were at least rewarded with a wicket through Amity Palmer.
After that, the MDCA travelled to Newstead to meet Castlemaine, in a game that was reduced to 15 overs per innings due to the extreme heat that was in play.
Castlemaine started well and were able to maintain a run-rate of around 10 an over throughout the first half of the innings.
But to the MDCA’s credit, they were able to stop the run-scoring and were also able to take wickets.
Saige Purcell was able to get a wicket by clean-bowling her Castlemaine opponent, while there were also three run-outs, with some good fielding rewarded.
Castlemaine eventually finished on 106 off their 15 overs.
While the target was a bridge too far for the MDCA, they were able to meet personal goals of not going out before they were retired, with coach and co-ordinator Leigh Koop electing to swap batters every five overs.
Again, Arabella played a good hand in the innings, scoring 13 off 15 deliveries as the MDCA finished with a score of 34.
Carisbrook will host the final day of the competition on Sunday, with the MDCA hosting Gisborne White in their final round-robin match at 10 am, before the final game scheduled for 1.30 pm later in the afternoon.
