It’s a big weekend for Maryborough’s junior cohort, with netball and football teams taking over Bendigo as they look to progress in their respective finals series.
Maryborough’s 17 and under netball team will be looking for a passage through to the preliminary final when they play Kangaroo Flat on Sunday morning at Queen Elizabeth Oval.
A win over Golden Square in last week’s elimination final paved the way for Sunday’s meeting, with the Magpies leading for the bulk of the day en route to a 48-43 victory.
Despite Flat finishing three games ahead of the Magpies in 2022, there is reason for optimism that they can prove to be a tricky opponent on Sunday, especially since Flat are coming off a five goal loss to Sandhurst on Saturday morning.
The two teams have met once this year, with the end result seeing Maryborough lose by 10 goals at Princes Park.
A reversal of that result would seethe Magpies play against the loser of Gisborne and Sandhurst in the preliminary final.
Meantime, Maryborough’s under 14s and under 16s football teams will be looking for a passage into the grand final when they play their respective preliminary finals at Wade Street Recreation Reserve on Sunday.
The under 14s will be looking to bounce back from their second semi-final loss to Sandhurst last Sunday when they take on South Bendigo, a team in which the Magpies have tasted victory against twice this season.
For the under 16s, redemption will be on their mind after missing out on a grand final berth by just one point against Sandhurst last week, and will be looking to bounce back immediately against Castlemaine.
Both teams have taken one victory apiece in 2022 in their clashes, with the Magpies taking a 10-point win in their most recent meeting in round 12.
