Juggernauts hit back for Saturday pennant
It was all change in division one as last season’s frontrunners hit back, while division two already has two runaway leaders.
DIVISION ONE
Dunolly Blue vaulted straight to the top of the ladder courtesy of a dominant 81-38 victory over Highland White.
The new ladder leaders dominated on each of the three rinks, with Alan Weir taking a 27-13 win over Barry Mahar, while Peter Waters took a 33-9 win over Robert Bursill. Tony Galofaro had the closest rink of the day, but ensured a clean sweep with a 21-16 win over Roy Crawley.
Highland Tartan moved into second position on the ladder thanks to an equally dominant 88-38 win over Avoca Red.
Like their traditional premiership rival, Highland Tartan swept the rinks, with Greg Shay taking a 32-6 win over Gordon Marr, while Michael Fryar won 33-12 over Ian Proctor. Garry Coburn finished off the job with a 23-20 win over Daniel Giddings.
Both teams benefitted thanks to Talbot Gold’s 73-51 win over early ladder leader Maryborough Golf Blue.
Talbot Gold put together a productive afternoon, despite losing one of the three rinks on offer, with Golf Blue’s Anthony Chambers taking a 20-15 win over Matt Vernon.
But Chris Crossley’s 26-17 win over Kevin Prime and Peter McLaughlan’s 32-14 win over Gerry Carmody meant that it was Talbot Gold’s day.
As a result, just seven points separates Dunolly Blue from Talbot Gold on the ladder.
DIVISION TWO
Maryborough Golf and Newstead Blue continued on their merry way as they vaulted a game clear on top of the ladder.
Maryborough Golf has yet to drop a rink, and their 71-43 win over Highland ensured that they would take top billing on the ladder for the time being.
Kort Gay’s 17-16 win over Alan Muggridge was the most resistance Golf had for the day, while Ross Andrews also had a competitive matchup, eventually taking a 20-16 win over Bert Spencer. Harold Patullo’s 34-11 over Tilleke Wadeson was the key difference between the two teams on the day.
Newstead Blue dropped their first rink of the season, but that didn’t stop them from recording a 70-50 win over Dunolly Gold.
Dunolly Gold took two points thanks to Fabio Delconte’s 25-22 win over Bernie Gervasoni, but Newstead Blue otherwise dominated, with Andrew Theckston taking a 20-10 win over Aaron Britten and Brian Daly recording a 28-15 win over Paul Chase.
Elsewhere, their stablemates in Newstead White recorded their first victory of the season, defeating Bridgewater in a tight tussle.
Graeme Lipback took a 23-12 win over John Fagan, but Bridgewater were well and truly in contention for their first win when Ron Brown took a 28-12 win over Rod Jackson. But Peter Tangey’s 28-19 win over Curtis Mangan was enough to see Newstead White get over the line.
Carisbrook were back on the winner’s list for the first time this season with their 83-50 win over Talbot.
Ron Baker’s 26-17 win over Ray Prentice, and Ross Gregory’s 36-9 win over Geraldine Smith helped Carisbrook take complete control, even with Laurie Vernon taking two points for Talbot with a 24-21 win over Malcolm Milne.
The season had its first draw of the year with Maldon and Dunolly Green unable to be separated on 52 shots apiece.
All three results were showcased on every rink. Geoff Cobden took a rink for Maldon with a 20-15 win over Sandra Chaplin, while Dunolly Green likewise took a 21-16 win through Wayne Stephens over Wesley Honeyman. James Smith and Annette Gillham drew the third rink on 16 shots apiece, meaning it was a share of the points for both teams.
Avoca had the bye.
ROUND FOUR
With so little separating the top teams in both divisions, round four looms as an important round.
Early ladder-leaders Maryborough Golf Blue will look to try take back top spot away from Dunolly Blue when the two teams meet at Golf.
Highland Tartan could benefit too if they are able to defeat stablemates Highland White.
Talbot Gold will be hoping to continue their ascent towards the top when they travel to Avoca Red.
In division two, Maryborough Golf will look to continue their unbeaten run when they take on Dunolly Gold.
Newstead Blue will travel to Talbot as they look towards continuing their good start to the season.
After taking their first win of the season, Newstead White will be hoping to continue their good start when they host Carisbrook.
Avoca will be desperate to take their first win of the season when they host Dunolly Green, while Bridgewater are in a similar predicament as they travel to Maldon.
Highland will have the bye in division two.
