Initiative aids development
Phillips Gardens will soon be home to a new StoryWalk, promoting an active and fun literacy experience.
StoryWalks are a fun and educational activity that places a children’s story along the path of a popular walking route in the community.
Fabulous Frogs written by Katrine Germain and illustrated by Suzanne Houghton has been chosen to mark the first ever launch of a StoryWalk in the Central Goldfields Shire, welcoming children and families to leap between each page around the pond at Phillips Gardens.
Central Goldfields Shire mayor Grace La Vella said the StoryWalk will be a wonderful addition to Phillips Gardens.
“The StoryWalk takes participants on a journey around the Phillips Gardens in Maryborough,” she said.
“The project has created an opportunity to combine literacy and physical activity and plays an important role in the overall health and wellbeing of our community
“Being active is good for our bodies, and reading is good for our brains. The combination of both is a great all-round activity for our health and well-being for residents of all ages to enjoy.”
The stories will be updated with each school term, with a new story to be available in the winter school holidays.
The new addition to Phillips Gardens is made possible thanks to funding through the Victorian Government’s Healthy Loddon Campaspe initiative.
The community is invited to attend the launch which will feature free fruit and a drawing competition before walking the new StoryWalk through Phillips Gardens, beginning at Maryborough Library.
The official opening will take place next Tuesday, March 18 at 3.45 pm at Phillips Gardens.
