Hundreds of athletes to compete in Maryborough as part of Little Aths Open Day
The Maryborough Little Athletics Club annual Open Day is ready, set, go for this Sunday, with over 200 kids from across the state participating.
For over two decades, the local athletics club has put out the call to all other Little Athletics Clubs to compete at Jack Pascoe Reserve.
According to club president Jacob Meyer, the call has well and truly been answered.
“This year we have 28 different athletics clubs in Victoria [represented] with over 200 kids participating which is pretty amazing,” he said.
“On the Open Day, kids can win medals and ribbons, so it gives the kids an opportunity to compete against some of the best kids in Victoria.
“It’s great seeing the smiles on the kid’s faces when they get medals or breaking personal bests and just getting out there and competing.”
Many athletes are coming from as far north as Swan Hill, to as south as Corio and Geelong and as far as Dandenong and Cranbourne.
All athletes can compete in up to five events from all the events available as part of Sunday’s schedule.
Meyer said little athletics is a great way for kids to get active and learn the ropes of multiple events.
“On a regular Friday night we have 100 of our kids which is fantastic for such a small town,” he said.
“Little Athletics is a wonderful thing, the kids make friends, they get to enjoy being active, giving it a go and not just sitting at home on their screens.
“We have had a few of our athletes compete internationally. We had Mia (Schodde) go over to New Zealand which is another great opportunity but we have also had athletes compete interstate which a lot of our kids look up to.”
With first events beginning at 9.45 am and the last events commencing at 1.48 pm, Meyer is asking for volunteers to support the club during the event.
“The most important part is all the volunteers, the more volunteers we can get, the smoother the club runs,” he said.
“The amount of work that goes into the club from our volunteers and community members is amazing.”
The Maryborough Little Athletics Club Open Day is on this Sunday, February 9 at Jack Pascoe Reserve with first events at 9.45 am.
