NEWSTEAD 9.13 (67) def MALDON 7.7 (49)
A huge crowd at Newstead Recreation Reserve saw the Kangaroos prove themselves as a bona-fide finals contender, defeating Maldon by 18 points.
The first half was a tight affair, with Maldon surviving seven scoring shots from the Kangaroos with three goals of their own to lead by one point at the first change, before extending that to four points at the main break.
But it was all Newstead in the third quarter, kicking five goals while holding Maldon to just one major, breaking the game open and holding a 22-point lead at the final change.
The Kangaroos survived a mini-fightback from Maldon, who kicked two goals in the final quarter to ask some questions, to eventually take a crucial victory which saw them move just percentage behind Natte Bealiba for a top four spot.
Tyler James led the way with four goals for the Kangaroos, while a best on ground performance from Cordie McKendry gave them the firepower they needed. Alongside them, Anthony Robins, Joel Smith, Alex Murphy, Rhys Smith and the improving Jovian Goulton were also impressive.
Maldon’s best were Seb Greene, Alex Farrow, Adam Robinson, Patrick Long, Coby Bennett and Cody Gunn, with Gunn kicking three goals and Rhys Ford adding two.
