MEC’s Khoa Do and Highview’s Matilda Davis reached top marks throughout their year 12 studies, and were awarded with dux honours. They, alongside the rest of their graduated cohort, will now experience life after school following the release of ATAR results last Thursday.

Students from Highview College and Maryborough Education Centre (MEC) were among the nearly 62,000 who officially graduated on Thursday, with many waking up at 7 am to learn their ATAR score.

For Highview’s Matilda Davis and MEC’s Khoa Do, the moment was even more special when they were announced as this year’s dux for their respective schools.

The feat is a wonderful achievement for both students, who are currently preparing to commence their tertiary studies at Deakin and Monash universities respectively.

Nearly nine percent of study scores reached 40 or above, while 688 study scores (0.3 percent) came back with a maximum score of 50.

Over 13 percent of graduates were VCE Vocational Major students, a program supporting students to transition into apprenticeships, traineeships and other job training opportunities that don’t require an ATAR.

What subjects did you do?

I did math methods, specialist maths, English, biology, chemistry and physics.

What does it mean to you to be dux?

It means it was worth it. All the hours and sacrifice that I did. It means that I can stop worrying and stressing. I can finally be free to do the other stuff that I enjoy.

What was your reaction when you heard the news that you received dux?

Relieved honestly, I thought I’d be in with a good chance. I was away at the time and didn’t know how my peers had gone. So, it was good to have it confirmed.

What advice do you have for students about to do year 12?

Have an idea of what you want to do and plan accordingly. So, if it’s a course with specific entry requirements, study hard for them but otherwise don’t overdo it, enjoy your last year of schooling.

And lean into your teachers for support, they’re happy to help.

What are your plans for the future?

I’m looking to do a double degree in engineering and science at Monash. So that would involve moving down to Melbourne.

I have secured accommodation at the residential colleges down there so I’m excited.

What subjects did you do?

I completed biology, psychology, English, health and human development, physical education and math methods.

What does it mean to you to be dux?

I highly value being dux, I am honoured to be named among many people before me who have gone on to be very successful.

What was your reaction when you heard the news that you received dux?

I was surprised when I was told I was dux, at first not believing my teacher.

I feel very grateful to everyone within and outside of school who have assisted me throughout my schooling.

What advice do you have for students about to do year 12?

I advise year 12 students to capitalise on assistance from their teachers. I really valued getting feedback and guidance from my teachers on how to improve responses and to ensure my knowledge was correct.

I also recommend establishing study techniques that work for them, and figuring what these techniques are earlier on in the year to help make studying easier as exams get closer.

Year 12 is an exciting time and I think as well as trying their best academically, students should try to make the most of their year 12 experience and opportunities.

What are your plans for the future?

Next year I want to study a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Deakin in Geelong, and then hopefully study medicine afterwards.

I ultimately want to become a paediatrician and work in Victoria as well as overseas. If possible, I would like to find some time to travel over the next few years.
