If the first week of finals was anything to go by, it looks like it’ll be a thrilling finish to the midweek season for 2022/23.
Both finals games were decided by 11 shots or less, with Highland Tartan taking the first slot in the grand final to be played next Saturday at Maryborough Golf Club, while Dunolly Blue and Talbot will be playing off for the right to meet them when they face off at Highland on Tuesday.
Highland may have lost the minor premiership to Dunolly Blue, but they landed the most significant blow of the midweek pennant season so far thanks to a 61-50 win on Tuesday.
Leanne Wallis took a thrilling first rink with a 23-20 win over Margaret Davies, before Greg Shay gave Tartan complete control thanks to a 20-10 win over Alan Weir. While Tony Galofaro took a 20-18 win over Jan Turner, it was not enough to turn around the margin.
Despite finishing 49 points behind Talbot in the home and away season, Avoca proved finals are a different ball game by taking the Yabbies all the way before eventually going down 54-60.
Talbot won the first rink, with Robert Jackson taking a 23-18 win over Daniel Giddings, but Avoca hit back on the second rink, with Christine Bearpark taking a 21-18 win over Geraldine Smith. Talbot would eventually take the win thanks to Barb Crossley’s 19-15 win over Ann Loosmore.
The Yabbies now progress to the preliminary final, where they’ll be looking to turn around their only meeting with Dunolly Blue from round 10.
Thanks to Victoria’s incessant rain, the round three meeting was called off.
But Dunolly Blue took a dominant 85-28 victory in round 10 to show that Talbot will have plenty of work to do on Tuesday to turn it around.
Heather Freemantle took a dominant 38-2 win over Noreen Morris, but Talbot were able to take a leg back thanks to Jackson’s 21-16 win over Margaret Davies. It was Dunolly Blue’s day however, with Galofaro taking a dominant 31-5 win over Peter McLoughlin to secure victory.
