Highland Tartan took control of the midweek pennant ladder following a strong win over Maryborough Golf on Tuesday, with Paul Gothard focusing on the task at hand.

Round two of the midweek bowls competition saw Highland Tartan and Talbot take commanding top two spots on the ladder thanks to strong wins over Carisbrook and Maryborough Golf respectively.

Despite losing two rinks, a massive 45-9 win on rink three ensured Talbot would take the win over Carisbrook 79-50, taking 12 points in the process.

However, Carisbrook ensured that they would at least take home four points with a 25-19 victory on rink one, as well as a thrilling 16-15 win on rink two.

Highland Tartan’s win was much more convincing, winning in straight sets over Golf 83-41 to vault to the top of the ladder.

Tartan were able to win rinks one and three convincingly, 27-14 and 32-9 respectively, while Golf put in a solid effort on rink two, going down 24-18.

The thriller of the round saw Dunolly Gold pinch victory over Highland Gold 53-52 thanks to tight victories on rinks two and three.

Highland Gold took the initiative with a 17-14 victory on rink one, but Dunolly Gold were able to bounce back with a 21-19 victory on rink two, before an 18-16 victory on rink three allowed them to win by the barest of margins, taking their first victory of the season.

The highest score of the round saw Dunolly Blue take their first win of the year, defeating Avoca by 50 shots, 84-34.

A massive 43-1 victory on rink one had essentially sewn up the game very quickly, and a 25-13 victory on rink three solidified their position, ensuring they would boost their percentage. However, they were unable to complete the sweep, with Avoca taking home two precious competition points thanks to a 20-16 victory on rink two.

The win was enough to see Dunolly Blue move up to fourth place on the ladder, sitting behind Carisbrook, Talbot and Highland Tartan.

Round three of the midweek competition will see Talbot take on Dunolly Blue, while Highland Tartan will take on Avoca. Carisbrook will look to keep in touch with the top two when they play Highland Gold, while Dunolly Gold will take on Maryborough Golf.
