Highland’s annual grants open
The Maryborough Highland Society’s annual grants program has helped uplift countless struggling community groups since its inception — and with over $100,000 already donated, the initiative is now accepting applications for the next round of funding.
Each year, the organisation selects around 20 local not-for-profit or community-focused groups to support with funds ranging from $1200 to $2000.
These donations are collected through the Highland Society’s Community Night events, with all proceeds raised from raffle sales on the night going towards local groups.
On average, two events are run every month, depending on the number of applications the organisation receives for the year.
“We hold anywhere between 15 to 20 events through the year — one dedicated for each group we support,” Highland Society’s general manager Malcolm Blandthorn said.
“We’re looking for more applicants to come in this year so we can spread the joy to more community groups.”
Some of the clubs that have benefitted from the program include the Maryborough Red Cross, the local ambulance auxiliary and the historical society.
According to Mr Blandthorn, with the Highland Society eager to get more groups on board for next year, the application process is easy to get behind.
“There’s nothing that community organisations really need to do — it’s very simple,” he said.
“They just need to tell us what they’re going to use the money for.
“Then the [board] will assess each application and finalise the groups for the 2025 round. After that, those selected clubs just need to come and support their community night — the more people they can get there who buy the raffle tickets, the more money they get back.”
Echoing the message, Danny McIver, secretary of the local Vietnam Veterans and RSL, said it was well worth putting your hand up.
“This grant has been a very big boost to us,” he said.
“We really rely on the money that we get through the Highland Society and we appreciate their effort in keeping us going.
“I think all relevant community groups should consider applying — we’re a very generous community and if people need help to continue operating their club, this could really support them.”
Applications for the 2025 Community Night Grants will close on December 6 — all submissions must be made before then.
Forms can be picked up from the front desk at the Maryborough Highland Society.
