It was a day of heartbreak for Maryborough’s senior team, as they were overrun for the second consecutive home game to lose by 17 points.
The Magpies made a strong start to the game when Liam Murphy goaled within the first three minutes from a set shot from 50 metres out, before adding another immediately afterwards through Jai Howell to give them an early two-goal lead.
Kangaroo Flat hit back to score a goal towards the end of the quarter, but the Magpies were still able to lead by a goal at the first break.
The Kangaroos levelled things up early in the second quarter, but Matt Johnston was able to restore the lead for Maryborough with a set shot goal.
The quarter largely belonged to Kangaroo Flat, who would respond with the next three goals, but Mitch McClure would give Maryborough the impetus heading into half time with a good running goal set up by Joel Swatton to leave the Magpies trailing by just two points at the break.
Maryborough came out as the much stronger team in the third quarter and were dominating all aspects of play. They took the lead at the six minute mark of the quarter through Jake Lohmann, who converted from a set shot.
Unfortunately, it would be the only goal of the quarter. The Magpies had chance after chance, but would ultimately kick eight points in a row, which saw them lead by 11 points at the final change, despite having 11 more scoring shots.
The inaccuracy in front of goal would haunt the Magpies as the last quarter started, with Kangaroo Flat kicking three goals in the first five minutes of the last quarter to hit the front.
Maryborough tried desperately to hit back, and some strong hands from Taj Bond saw him kick his first senior goal to bring the Magpies back within two points.
It was soon goal for goal, with the Kangaroos kicking the next goal, before Bond responded again for his second goal.
However, it was the Kangaroos that ran out the game the better, kicking the final two goals of the game to take victory, kicking 11.12 (78) to the Magpies’ 7.19 (61).
Lohmann was the Magpies’ best player for the day, with Bailey Snelling also performing well after coming along from Noarlunga. McClure, Bond, Murphy and Bailey Edwards, also in his first game back for the club, also performed well.
The Magpies will now look to bounce back next weekend when they travel to the similarly winless Kyneton.
