The B.A Road Services Talbot Hawks took another big step towards breaking their 15-year finals drought in the A grade competition with a 22-goal victory over Newstead at Talbot Recreation Reserve.

The result sees the Hawks move into seventh place, usurping the Kangaroos in the process, and they now need one more win to secure a finals berth.

It was a spirited, high-scoring start from both teams as they looked to take charge from the outset, but it was the Hawks who scored 19 goals to 13 to take an early six-goal lead. Dom Roche scored 14 goals for the term, and Eleisha Phelps added five for the Hawks, while for Newstead, Bri Jury scored seven goals and Tayla Gale six.

The second quarter was even closer, and it was still very much game on as Talbot scored 14 goals to Newstead’s 11 to lead 33-24 at the main break. Roche scored 11 goals and Phelps three for the Hawks, while for the Kangaroos, Gale scored eight goals and Jury three.

The scoring dried up a little bit in the third term, but it was Talbot who continued to maintain the rage, lifting defensively to hold the Kangaroos to just five goals to the term, while scoring 10 goals of their own to make it a 43-28 lead at the final change. Roche scored six goals and Tia Skelton four for the Hawks, while Gale scored four and Jury one for the Kangaroos.

The Hawks finished full of running, and continued their high-scoring run with a 17-goal final term, while holding the Kangaroos to nine goals, to take their sixth victory in eight starts.

Roche finished with 46 goals for the day with a 15-goal haul in the last term, while Phelps added two more for the Hawks. For the Kangaroos, Gale scored three goals to finish with 21 for the day, while Jury finished with six goals to end with 17 for the day.

The Hawks can secure a finals berth should they take a second win over Maldon next week, while Newstead will need to bounce back against Natte Bealiba to also secure their spot in the final eight.
