TALBOT (51) def NAVARRE (35)

The B.A Road Services Talbot Hawks are another step closer to breaking a long-standing A grade netball finals drought, while virtually ending Navarre’s chances with a 16-goal victory at Talbot.

The win for the Hawks is their fifth in seven games. Such is their form at the moment, from round seven to now, the Hawks would lie fourth, the truest statement of their charge towards the finals.

The Hoppers, in the meantime, have now been consigned to a ninth consecutive loss, and while they will get four premiership points thanks to the bye, their task to make the finals has become a mammoth mountain to climb.

The first quarter was a goal-for-goal affair, with both teams scoring strongly in the opening period, and it was Talbot who held a one-goal lead after scoring 14 goals to 13. Dom Roche scored 10 goals for the Hawks, while Eleisha Phelps added four, and for Navarre, Mollie Simpson scored 11 goals, and Sadie Reading two.

The second quarter saw Talbot start to clear away, and 12 goals to seven for the term meant that the Hawks were six goals clear at the main break, leading 26-20. Roche scored nine goals and Phelps three for the Hawks, while for the Hoppers, Simpson scored six goals and Reading one.

With the game on the line, Navarre threw caution to the wind, but all their challenges were met by the Hawks, who won the quarter 12-11 to increase their lead to seven goals at the last change, 38-31. Roche scored 10 goals and Phelps two for the Hawks, while Simpson scored nine goals and Reading two for Navarre.

The last quarter saw Talbot run away with the game, finishing up with 13 goals, while restricting Navarre’s ball movement, and holding them to four goals.

Roche finished with another nine goals to finish up with 38 for the day, while Phelps scored another four for the Hawks, while for the Hoppers, Simpson led the way with another three goals to finish with 29, while Reading added one goal.

Both teams will now have the bye in round 14.
