Harcourt show they are still title contenders
The Lions have made their intentions known, they are hunting for another premiership and are ready to roar.
Harcourt is well and truly back in the fight for the top four, defeating top-of-the-table Talbot after an impressive first half, reminding the MCDFNL they remain one of the most dangerous teams in the competition.
The victory puts the Lions only two points behind Carisbrook in fourth, with only six points separating the top five teams in the competition.
After Talbot’s Adam Scott kicked the opening goal just three minutes in, the Hawks were up and about.
Dean Limbach followed that up when Jarrod Stephens picked the ball out of his opponent’s hands and kicked quickly to the star forward, who goaled from the set shot tight on the boundary.
Thomas Walters kicked two goals in succession for Harcourt to make it a one-point game at the 12-minute mark and Carl Thiesz put the Lions in front shortly after.
However, Stephens and Limbach combined once again for Limbach to take back the lead for the Hawks at the 16-minute mark.
This was the last time the Hawks would lead for the remainder of the game, as the Lions kicked the next three goals of the first term while holding Talbot scoreless in the second quarter and led at half time by 47 points.
The second half was a hard-fought contest, but a low-scoring affair.
The Lions could only score two goals in the second half, but held the Hawks to three goals in the same period, shutting down any chance of a Talbot comeback.
It was a disappointing day for the Hawks whose stint at the top of the ladder was short-lived, while Harcourt would be very pleased with their efforts and look to have a very comfortable draw for the remainder of the home and away season.
Walters was on fire for the Lions in the first half, kicking some spectacular goals under immense pressure to help the hosts build their early lead.
His five goals earned him a spot in Harcourt’s best players alongside Braydon Vaz, Jack Threlfall, Kaleb McBride, Cameron Anderson and Geoffrey Jolly.
Talbot named Charles Aitken, Kirk Lang, Luke Kemp, Michael Sikora, Jayson Atkins and Limbach as their best players, with Limbach finishing with four goals.
