HARCOURT 15.12 (102) def NEWSTEAD 3.7 (25)

Last year’s minor premier, Harcourt, has finished top four after a 77-point win over Newstead in the final home and away round.

The Lions were on from the first bounce at Harcourt Recreation Reserve, hosting their down-the-road-rivals for the last game before the finals campaign.

This game served as Newstead’s final outing for the year, and try as they might, the depleted Roos were no match for the Lions, which led by 21 points at quarter time and had pushed that out to a 36-point cushion by half time.

Stead’s own inaccuracy kept it out of the third, with three behinds scored to 4.3 (27) from the Lions.

Another four-goal term to finish put the cue in the rack, with Harcourt victorious 15.12 (102) to 3.7 (25) from the Roos.

Anthony Robins, Kayle Thompson, Brad Richardson, Cordie McKendry, Jedd Pedretti and James Mitchelhill were among the best for Newstead which has finished the 2022 season in 10th place after this result.

Paul Chaplin led the way for the Lions, followed by Darby Semmens, Cam Anderson, Kayne Davison, Sam Gale and Lachlan Mitchell with Anderson leading the goal tally with four, Gale and Jedd Rodda slotting three apiece and former AFL star Barry Hall and Ben Leech each chipping in two goals.

Harcourt has finished fourth and will take on minor premier Trentham in qualifying finals this weekend, a daunting prospect, however its worth remembering that the Lions were the only side able to topple Trentham this year.
