HARCOURT (42) def DUNOLLY (40)
Harcourt’s finals chances received a massive boost as they ended Dunolly’s six-game win-ning run — although that cer-tainly didn’t come without a late fright.
The Lions looked comfortable for large parts of the afternoon, but a furious final quarter fightback kept the game alive until the very last gasp.
It was a thrilling opening quarter, with both teams almost essentially going goal for goal. In the end, the Lions took a two-goal lead into the first change, scoring 11 goals to nine.
It was a reasonably similar story in the second term, with the Lions scoring 12 goals to the Eagles’ 10 to extend the margin to four goals at the main break.
But the third quarter saw the Lions well and truly pull away, scoring 13 goals, while holding the Eagles to just seven in the same time frame, to open up what seemed to be a match-winning 10-goal lead at the final change.
That didn’t deter the Eagles, who made a concerted effort to keep their top four hopes intact by scoring 14 goals, but with Harcourt scoring six goals of their own, the Eagles had too much work to do.
A player not named in the system scored 34 goals for Harcourt, while for Dunolly, Zoe Aldridge scored 19 goals, with Samantha Cheetham adding 17.
