A cup of coffee and a sandbag might not be the obvious combination, but it’s a practical one according to the local SES unit, who will be giving away a sandbag with each purchased coffee as part of a fundraiser this weekend.

The Maryborough SES unit will be set up at PJ’s Hardware at 75 Burns Street tomorrow, Saturday, October 1 selling coffee, soft drinks and giving away items for children.

While supporting the local unit’s fundraising efforts, tomorrow is also an opportunity for SES volunteers to speak with residents about preparing for spring, floodplans and how to join the SES.

“With spring preparedness in mind we’re giving away free sandbags with each coffee,” unit controller Darren Cooper said.

“That’s not because we’re expecting the worst, but because we like to plan for the worst and hope for the best and being prepared is something we can all do.

“We’re seeing continued rainfall so it’s important people are prepared for flooding and have a flood plan in place which is what we’re available to talk about.

“We’ll also be telling people what it’s like to be a member of the SES and how they can join if they’re interested.

“This is something we discussed with PJ’s a while ago and there was no hesitation, they’ve been a great support to us.”

Mr Cooper said aside from helping to cover operating costs, fundraising will go towards a thermal imaging camera for the local unit.

“The fundraising element assists us with our normal operating costs and helps us to buy new and updated equipment,” he said.

“We are looking at purchasing a thermal imaging camera at the moment with the greater amount of electric vehicles on the road.

“There is a heightened risk of thermal runaway when electric vehicles are involved in collisions and accidents so we are trying to keep our equipment updated to keep the public as safe as possible.”

The fundraiser will run from 9 am until 1 pm tomorrow and residents are encouraged to get involved.
