After Golf defeated Dunolly Blue by one shot in a memorable preliminary final last season, Dunolly Blue entered Tuesday’s away trip eyeing revenge.

As has become commonplace whenever these teams meet, the match went down to the wire with two rinks decided by the narrowest of margins.

With Golf’s Kort Gay holding off Alan Weir 21-20 and Chris Williams answering back for Dunolly Blue with a 19-18 win over Graeme Orr, Francis Smith’s 18-14 triumph over Tony Galofaro was the deciding factor for Golf.

Following their recent milestone win, Golf has brought itself back into the double chance race, while Dunolly Blue now sits 16 points behind first-placed Highland Tartan, who made quick work of Highland Gold 95-48.

Tartan now remains the only undefeated team in the midweek pennant after Gregory Shay defeated Dennis Prosser 28-18, Harvey Pearce overpowered Jeanette Oliver 35-13 and Garry Coburn was victorious against Tilleke Wadeson 32-17.

After starting the round at the bottom of the table, Carisbrook has leapt into fifth following a truly remarkable contest against Avoca.

In a quite inconceivable coincidence, two of the three rinks played ended in a tie, with Ann Loosmore’s contest against Judy Cassidy ending 20-20 and Ian Proctor drawing with Roy Pickering 18-18.

Carisbrook’s Cameron Taylor ended the drawing by overcoming Loralee Field 27-23.

Despite vaulting three places, Carisbrook’s gap to the top four has widened to 13 points thanks to Talbot’s statement win over Dunolly Gold 75-35.

Ray Prentice and Barbara Crossley ensured Talbot made the most of Avoca’s close defeat, with Prentice dominating Debbie Wintle 33-8 and Crossley vanquishing Barry Mortlock 26-12.

Fabio Delconte fought spiritedly for Dunolly Gold, but Chris Crossley did just enough to complete Talbot’s sweep with a 16-15 win over Delconte, allowing his team to move past Avoca into fourth.

Following the aftermath of the gripping round six action will be a tall order, but next Tuesday’s fixtures on paper look poised to provide even more excitement.

In an intense battle pitting first against second, Dunolly Blue and Highland Tartan will once again do battle in the region’s premier rivalry that has spanned over multiple Grand Final meetings in the past decade.

Whoever wins the latest chapter in that historic rivalry, Maryborough Golf is set to benefit, but only if they complete a successful road trip against Dunolly Gold.

With their confidence at a high, Carisbrook can move into the finals places by defeating a Talbot team currently inside the top four.

Two finals hopefuls will complete next Tuesday’s action, as Highland Gold hosts Avoca.
