Golf join Tartan in grand final
Maryborough Golf have booked their place into a Maryborough grand final after taking a thrilling preliminary final contest against Dunolly Blue by one shot 50-49.
It was an exhilarating matchup between two talented sides where every end mattered.
With more finals experience and home turf at their disposal, Dunolly Blue managed to take the first two rinks by nail-biting scorelines.
Reigning Men’s Goldfields Champion of Champions winner Chris Williams started proceedings with a 16-14 win over Elizabeth Bucknall and his Dunolly Blue teammate Alan Weir followed suit, defeating Graeme Orr 19-17.
Despite losing the first two rinks, Maryborough Golf still had a strong chance of victory, needing Kort Gay to win the final rink against Tony Galofaro by five shots or more.
Gay produced a sublime finals performance to remember, grabbing a 19-14 victory to see Maryborough Golf signed, sealed and delivered to the season finale.
They will face off against Highland Tartan in a battle of Maryborough to see who comes out on top in the midweek pennant.
After defeating Dunolly Blue 58-50 in last year’s grand final, Tartan will be looking to repeat as champions and have looked the part throughout the season.
After losing their first game to Dunolly Blue, Tartan remained undefeated for the rest of the season scoring 1031 shots, 137 shots higher than Dunolly Blue in second.
The minor premiers also allowed the least shots against them this season with 547.
Tartan will certainly be the favourites going into the grand final, but Maryborough Golf has prided itself on being the underdog in this finals series.
After finishing just outside of the finals places in fifth last season, Maryborough Golf leapfrogged Tartan’s sister team Highland Gold in the final round after defeating Talbot to qualify for finals in fourth.
They would repeat their round 14 result in the semi-final, knocking out the higher-seeded Talbot in convincing fashion 71-41 before vanquishing second-placed Dunolly Blue in the preliminary final.
The two teams faced off twice in the regular season in round three and round 10, with Tartan winning both contests 83-27 and 93-39 respectively.
