A cause close to home for many in the community, cancer will be put under the spotlight next week as the Maryborough Golf Club holds its Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser.

The Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea, now in its 30th year, is an annual fundraiser that encourages communities across the country to organise a morning tea event and donate to the organisation’s research into cancer.

Taking place next Thursday, Maryborough Golf Club functions and events coordinator Kelly Walker said support for the event from residents and local businesses has been overwhelming.

“We already have 152 bookings and we’re close to being booked out which is great,” she said.

“The support we’ve received from businesses in the community in terms of donations for raffle items has been overwhelming.

“We’re going to be doing quite a few raffles on the day and we have amazing prices, we’re raffling off everything from a hamper donated by Priceline to a men’s Fossil watch donated by the local jewellers and heaps of vouchers for local businesses.

“If the event is as successful as it looks like it’s going to be, we will continue doing this every year.”

Ms Walker said it was an important fundraiser for the venue to support.

“Cancer is something that’s impacted everyone, I have a friend who’s recently been diagnosed with stage four cancer,” she said.

“A lot of people, whether they’re ladies or gentlemen, live with this horrible disease and I felt we should do something about it.

“We do a lot of fundraising here for local causes but the Biggest Morning Tea and the Cancer Council cover every type of cancer there is, it’s not about a specific type.

“I think it’s very important we try and at least find a cure for one or some of them.”

The morning tea, in addition to raffles and prizes to be won, will feature a buffet of sweet and savoury food with complimentary tea and coffee.

The Maryborough Golf Club’s Biggest Morning Tea event will take place next Thursday, May 25 from 10.30 am.

Tickets are $20 per person with all proceeds from tickets and the raffles to be donated straight to the Cancer Council.
