After a wild trade period full of speculation over his future, Newstead product Jack Ginnivan has swapped nests and stripes and moved from Collingwood to Hawthorn.

The trade request came in the dying days of the trade period, with Ginnivan sensationally making an official request to move to the Hawks on Wednesday’s deadline day — the team he supported growing up.

The complex exchange sees Collingwood get pick 33 in this year’s national draft, as well as Hawthorn’s future second and third-rounders, while Hawthorn receives Ginnivan, pick 39, a future second and a future fourth-rounder from Collingwood.

Ginnivan’s move comes after becoming a premiership player with the Magpies, following their thrilling four-point victory in the grand final against the Brisbane Lions three weeks ago.

However, after kicking 40 goals in 2022, his 2023 season wasn’t without controversy, having had to serve a two-week ban prior to the season starting after footage emerged of him taking an illicit substance.

An impromptu trip to Mooney Valley the night before the grand final also made headlines, however, Ginnivan has since become the ambassador for the 2023 Cox Plate, to be held next Saturday.

Coupled with Norm Smith medallist Bobby Hill making an instant impression after arriving from Greater Western Sydney in the 2022 trade period, Ginnivan made only 14 appearances during the season, including five as the tactical substitute.

With Hawthorn losing small forward Tyler Brockman to West Coast, and Chad Wingard suffering an Achilles injury towards the end of the season, Ginnivan will look to make the most of his new home.
