Giants take fight to Carisbrook, going down in an eventual eight-goal defeat
It was a fierce competition at the Carisbrook Recreation Reserve on Saturday, where the home side were eventual winners over the Maryborough Giants, who put up a hell of a fight.
Both sides were out for blood from the outset, as Carisbrook looked to control the match early and the Giants sought to stamp their name into the competition this season.
By the conclusion of the first quarter it was very much anyone’s game, with both sides sitting at 15 goals all.
The second quarter was eagerly as fierce, with Carisbrook edging out a slight lead of two goals at the main break, leading the Giants 35-33.
Despite a fight from the visitors, Carisbrook found their feet and powered through the third, finding an avenue to goal on 16 occasions to the Giants’ 13.
With a five-goal lead heading into the final quarter, the Giants had a strong chance of taking the glory from Saturday’s clash.
Carisbrook on the other hand, had other plans.
Scoring 14 goals to Maryborough’s 11, the Redbacks took the hard-fought eight goal win gladly on the weekend, though the Giants’ fight is a sign of much more competitive play to come out of Maryborough.
Brook’s Abbey Nalder had a great day in goal, slotting 40 goals at 75 percent accuracy, while fellow scorer Jordan MacIlwain added 25 of her own.
It was Lacey Broad for the Giants that once again stunned in goals, scoring 48 goals from 58 attempts to shoot at 82 percent accuracy.
