Maryborough Giants weathered a strong Maldon challenge throughout the afternoon before clearing out to win by 16 goals at Bill Woodfull Reserve.
It’s a result that ensures the Giants are still one of four unbeaten teams, although they have lost their status as ladder-leaders for the first time, while Maldon are still winless, yet perhaps stiff to be in that position after three incredibly competitive efforts.
Scores were tied up at the end of the first period as both teams scored 13 goals. For Maldon, Ainsley Taft scored seven goals, and Katie Tong scored six, while for the Giants, Annalyse Carroll scored eight goals, and Abbey Raven five.
The Giants started to make their move in the second quarter as they snuck away to a four-goal lead by the main break, thanks to 14 goals to 10 to lead 27-23 at the main break.
Both teams made some changes during the quarter, with Zoe Backway replacing Taft, while Abbey Devereaux replaced Raven early in the second term. Carroll scored 10 goals for the Giants, with Devereaux adding three and Raven one, while for Maldon, Backway and Tong scored five times each.
The third quarter was still a very tight affair, with neither team able to make a significant move. As it was, the Giants scored 11 goals to nine to lead 38-32 at the final change.
Devereaux scored seven goals and Carroll four for the Giants, while Tong scored four goals, Backway three and Taft two for the Dons.
The Giants finally managed to shake off Maldon in the last quarter as they scored 17 goals to seven to eventually take what was a comfortable victory in the end. Carroll scored nine goals, and Devereaux eight for the Giants, while for Maldon, Taft scored four times and Tong three.
It’s a big test now for the Giants when they host Lexton at Hedges Oval next week, while Maldon make the short trip to Campbells Creek as both teams seek their first win of the season.
