From the opening bounce, Newstead appeared to have the upper hand going into the final quarter, the visitors led by 14 points in the low-scoring encounter.

Both teams had plenty of opportunities in the final stanza, but the Giants were more accurate around the goal mouth, kicking three goals while Newstead could only manage five behinds.

Regular defender and Giants captain, Cody Wright, played a big part in the Giants’ comeback when he went forward in the final term to kick two of the Giants’ three goals.

In an exciting final stanza, the Giants hit the front midway into the term, and Newstead went forward on numerous occasions, but could not kick a major score as the Giants’ defence held strong.

A couple of minor scores levelled the scoreboard late in the game. The ball went forward into the Giants’ scoring zone in the dying stages when the siren sounded, with both teams locked on 36 points each.

Giants named their best players as Zayne Earl, Jude Gourley, Scott Miller, Seth Hoskin, Peter Wytkamp and Kaylab Eggers.

Newstead named their best as Michael Dalrymple, Nick Lord, Hayden Hall, Harry McGuire, Angus Mayes and Brendan McDougall.
