Funds raised for show
Cowboys, horns, and flowing dresses filled Paramount Theatre Friday evening to raise money for an upcoming local production.
Maryborough Theatre Company invited everyone in the community to join them for a special viewing of Disney’s Snow White to raise money for their production of Into the Woods.
Some of those who came along dressed as their favourite fairytale character in the spirit of the upcoming production. It meant cowboys waited in line for popcorn and fairies ran through the lobby.
The production’s director, Brianna Mills, said Into the Woods jumped out at her as something special.
“I love how the fairytales entwine. It’s just a really fun show. As director I always go for a show that speaks to me, and it just spoke to me, not every show does,” she said.
The assistant director, Vanessa Pink, enjoys how it reimagines the original Brothers Grimm fairytales.
“I like it because it’s a little bit dark and twisty, it’s not your standard fairytale story,” she said.
Each production brings a community of performers together locally. Ms Mills is excited to see kids as young as six or seven getting involved through to someone in their 70s, everybody is welcome.
“It’s somewhere for the youth and the adults to come in and they can be themselves,” she said.
For Ms Pink, theatre not only offers an opportunity to bring out a different side of herself, but also the happiness of seeing the joy in others.
“It makes me so happy to know that I helped make [the performers] happy and have them enjoy their time together,” she said.
But as a non-profit, fundraising and community support is critical for their productions. From paint for the sets, to hampers at the fundraiser, community support is key.
“The community involvement is fantastic,” Ms Mills said.
Into the Woods will be performed on May 15, 16, and 17 from 7 pm at Highview College. For more information, and to see when tickets go on sale, visit the Maryborough Theatre Company’s Facebook page.
