More students will receive bigger scholarships from the local Freemasons thanks to a successful fundraiser night recently.
The Central Goldfields Masonic Group (CGMG) provides students in the region with education scholarships each year, and the recent successful fundraiser saw just over $1600 to go towards the primary school scholarships.
Additional matching funds are provided by Freemasons Foundation of Victoria.
CGMG chairman Ken Calder said the group has worked hard to continue providing the scholarships.
“For several years these events have been cancelled because of the COVID pandemic, however local Freemasons with the help of the Lodge Ladies Lunch Group (Triple Ls) managed to keep providing the usual number of awards, which started at $100, to their increased value last year of $200 for one year six student in each of the 14 classes around Maryborough,” he said.
“The resulting extra funds this year will allow the CGMG to offer 15 awards by including Newstead Primary School, while raising those scholarships to $300 each.”
Students are selected for the scholarships by school principals and year six teachers, and are presented to one student transitioning to secondary education that the teacher and principal feel deserves encouragement and support.
