Mount Alexander Shire residents can dispose of their green waste for free next month at the Maldon and Castlemaine transfer stations.
The free green waste disposal period will be in place from January 16 to January 29.
“Additional garden growth following the recent floods over spring means that keeping on top of garden maintenance is more important than ever,” Mount Alexander Shire Council acting emergency management coordinator Zachary Abbott said.
“We’re encouraging residents to clean up their homes and properties now to reduce the risk of fire during summer.
“Council staff have been hard at work slashing grass since November to minimise fire risk, and staff will also be conducting inspections across the shire to ensure properties are fire-ready this summer.”
Green waste includes garden waste such as grass, sticks and branches that are less than 10 centimetre in diameter. Green waste must be free of contaminants such as rubbish, bricks, soil, rubble and declared noxious weeds, and removed from plastic bags prior to disposal.
Proof of residence in the shire will be required.
