Flood mitigation remains priority
The Central Goldfields Shire Council is continuing to prioritise flood management in Carisbrook, with councillors noting updated flood mitigation measures last month.
At council’s June meeting, councillors noted a progress update on the delivery of the Carisbrook Levee Review and Draft Implementation Plan and the Carisbrook Flood Management Plan Review and Update.
Central Goldfields Shire mayor Grace La Vella said the report demonstrated council’s continued commitment to responsible flood management in Carisbrook.
“Everything that is undertaken in terms of flood mitigation in Carisbrook is underpinned by the commissioning of the Carisbrook Flood Management Plan Review and Update,” she said.
“This is a huge body of work which will allow us to better understand the flood risk for Carisbrook for the full range of flood events, extension of the mapping area to include Flagstaff, and to reassess potential mitigation options for the town that may complement existing mitigation.
“Flood management is complex and involves collaboration across key agencies, other levels of government and the community. The updated Plan and Study will include a comprehensive community engagement strategy to ensure we hear all points of view.”
Cr La Vella also referenced the Flood Study Advisory Reference Group, comprising of local residents, councillors and council staff, to better inform decision making.
“The newly established Flood Study Advisory Reference Group which was appointed by council earlier this year will support this process by providing guidance, expertise and stakeholder perspectives,” she said.
“We acknowledge the findings from the Carisbrook Levee Review and the Draft Implementation Plan which were received and noted by council in September 2024.
“These documents have assisted council in informing the extent of updated Flood Management Plan and Study, which is the cornerstone in flood mitigation and management. A consultant will be appointed shortly to begin undertaking this very important work.
“We trust the commencement of the Carisbrook Flood Management Plan Review and Update will give our residents reassurance that flood mitigation in Carisbrook is and continues to be of the utmost importance to this council.”
