An Avoca home has been destroyed by flames over the weekend, with fire brigades fighting the blaze for over three hours.

Emergency services were called to a house fire in Dobleys Lane, Avoca at around 6.40 pm Saturday evening, with the house fully engulfed by the flames.

The resident of the property was home at the time of the incident, but was able to escape with no injuries.

Avoca Fire Brigade Captain Aaron McHoul said investigations into the incident remain ongoing.

“At one stage we had around nine trucks at the scene and it took around three and a half hours before the fire was deemed under control — the cause of the fire is yet to be determined,” he said.

Captain McHoul said the incident is a timely reminder for residents to be aware of preventable fires.

“Make sure that you are aware of the dangers of house fires all year round,” he said.

“Keep your chimneys clean, have fire screens in place so if you have something come out of the fire, it doesn’t go onto the carpet or out of the fireplace and ensure you have working smoke alarms.”
