The Talbot community will once again come together this week to celebrate Christmas, with a bigger and brighter spectacle planned for Friday’s Light Up Talbot event.

Now running for four years, Light Up Talbot sees the town’s iconic streetscape, buildings and gardens filled with lights, live music and events to bring the community together this festive season.

Talbot resident and one of the event’s organisers, Margot Bettles, said this year’s Light Up Talbot event is set to be the biggest and best yet.

“This year has really built on what we did last year,” she said.

“Last year was definitely a success, we had so many people come to see it and we’re hoping to have even more come along this year.

“We’ve got more lights in more places — so it’s definitely bigger and better than last year.”

Light Up Talbot began as a way to give back to the community following the COVID-19 pandemic and has grown into a showcase of the town’s festive spirit.

“Light Up Talbot is a way for us to bring more people into town and show everyone what Talbot is all about,” Ms Bettles said.

“We want to show everyone the hard work this community puts in and bring everyone together at the same time to celebrate.”

Light Up Talbot will see Christmas lights on display in Ballarat Street, the Talbot Town Hall and ANA Hall, RSL and Senior Citizens, Market Square, the community garden and more.

It will feature live music by Sweet Mona’s Choir, Sarah Landy, Jason Wasley and the Ballarat Vocal Studio at the town hall from 7.30 pm onwards as well as street food and performances from 5 pm.

Ms Bettles encouraged community members to get involved in this year’s event.

“There’ll be some street performances on the night and students at Talbot Primary School have been working really hard to put on a show for the community,” she said.

“It’ll be great for the community to come along and get involved in this, the whole town is turning their Christmas lights on for the one night and it’s a sight worth seeing.”

Light Up Talbot will take place this Friday, December 1 from 5 until 9 pm.
