Central Goldfields Shire residents will have a plethora of options to celebrate Australia Day this Friday, with ceremonies scheduled in towns across the shire.
The largest event on January 26 will be held in Maryborough, with a free family event with breakfast provided at the Station Domain, starting at 8.30 am.
Australia Day awards, including the town’s Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Award of the Year will be presented at 9 am.
A citizenship ceremony will follow for new residents becoming Australians, as well as medals given to babies born during 2023, and books to be handed to children starting kindergarten in 2024.
Bealiba’s celebrations will commence at 11 am from the Bealiba Town Hall.
Organiser Heather Davis said she is excited to see the community come together for the event.
“We will be raising the flag over the town hall, Bernie Smith will be guest speaking on the day, a free barbecue and music will also be there for the day,” she said.
“The event helps bring the community together and allows us to express our love and pride for this country.”
The Carisbrook Australia Day event will also see a barbecue sizzling at Market Reserve, beginning at 10.30 am.
The Tilly Aston Achievement Awards for outstanding volunteers and the Mayor for the Day awards will be announced at the event.
The Daisy Hill Community Centre will once again host the Daisy Hill service, which begins at 11 am with a free barbecue and councillor Chris Meddows-Taylor as guest speaker.
Organiser Bill Robinson said the event plays an important role in the community each year.
“The community here is a little bit older, so it is always good to be able to hold events where everyone can be together and enjoy the day,” he said.
Dunolly’s event kicks off at 10 am in Gordon Gardens with a barbecue to boot.
The official service starts at 11 am where the town’s Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year for 2024 will be named.
Organiser Gayle Boardman said it is crucial to recognise the best of the best in the town.
“I think [the awards] are important, because when the community has voted for their hard work and support for the community, they deserve the recognition,” she said.
“It really is a feel good day overall, people are able to catch up with each other that they may not have seen for a while, it’s a very peaceful environment.”
For those early risers, an Australia Day breakfast will be on offer in Talbot from 8 am at the Soldiers Memorial Park in Heales Street.
