EB Games to close, among many
Maryborough’s only dedicated video game retailer, EB Games, is closing down joining a series of closures from the retailer in recent months.

Earlier this week, locals discovered that EB Games, in the Goldfields Shopping Centre, would be closing down following Saturday, October 25.
Although the retailer did not provide a clear reason for the closure, The Maryborough District Advertiser understands other stores across the country have been closed in recent months.
This includes EB Games stores in Swan Hill, Colac, and Echuca in Victoria, Mudgee in NSW, and Atherton in Queensland.
The company’s brand director, Camilla Hanbury, said the local closure followed a review of their stores across Australia.
“We regularly review our network of over 300 stores across Australia to ensure we’re meeting the needs of our customers in the best way possible,” Hanbury said.
“Following a recent review, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our Maryborough store.”
Maryborough’s EB Games opened in 2012.
At the time, then district manager for western Victoria Mick Ryan said there were several reasons to come to town.
“A lot of people were driving to Wendouree or Bendigo to go to EB Games and now it’s much easier for them,” he said.
In the over decade since, however, the sentiment has changed with Hanbury encouraging local customers to shop online or in-store at Ballarat or Bendigo.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the support of our local customers over the years,” Hanbury said.
EB Games ignored questions on how many staff were impacted by the local closure, and it’s unclear how many staff have been impacted by the closures more broadly.
In 2020, it was widely reported that EB Games was closing down 19 “unprofitable stores” across the country by the end of January that year.
In a comment provided to Kotaku Australia, a spokesperson said, “where possible, staff were offered the opportunity to work in surrounding stores”.
It’s understood Maryborough’s EB Games will be holding a closing-down sale in the lead-up to the closure.
