It was a dour struggle of attrition, but Dunolly were able to get their first win of the year after defeating Harcourt by two goals.

It was a power struggle throughout the game, with just 54 goals scored, but at the end of it, the Eagles kept in touch with the top eight.

A good start allowed them to lead by three goals at the opening change, 8-5, even though Harcourt had the better of the play with 17 shots to 13. Zoe Aldridge scored five goals for the Eagles, with Samantha Cheetham adding three, while for Harcourt, Tegan McKay scored four times, and playing-coach Jess Chaplin once.

The Lions were able to get back in vogue in the second quarter, closing the gap to a goal by the main break, with Christine Webb moving to the goal shooter position, scoring three goals, while McKay added six. For the Eagles, Aldridge scored six times, and Cheetham once.

It was Harcourt’s turn to assume control in the third quarter, scoring 10 goals to six to lead by three goals at the final change, 24-21. McKay scored eight times, while Webb scored twice, while for Dunolly, Aldridge and Cheetham scored three apiece.

However, the Lions’ scoring fell away dramatically during the last quarter, as they could only manage two goals. Dunolly, in the meantime, came from behind, scoring seven goals to eventually take the four points. Aldridge scored four goals and Cheetham three for Dunolly, while McKay scored the only two goals for Harcourt.

The Lions will be seeking their first win of the season when they travel to the similarly-winless Trentham, while the Eagles will face a big challenge against Avoca.
