DUNOLLY 17.6 (108) def NAVARRE 7.6 (48)

Dunolly was too strong for a young Navarre team at Hedges Oval on Saturday when they defeated the Grasshoppers by 60 points.

It was a close tussle in the opening term and Navarre had the breeze and kicked three goals, but Dunolly answered with four goals, with two of the goals through Lloyd Needs who roved the pack and slotted one of the goals on his left foot on the run to get the Eagles up and about.

The Eagles were getting plenty of ball out of the middle with ruckman Bailey Hall giving his mids first use and it was one way traffic in the second term as the Eagles banged on six goals while holding the Grasshoppers to just one behind, as the Eagles led at half time by 42 points.

Navarre bounced back early in the third term kicking the first two goals of the quarter through Sam Rickard and Aiden Lee who kicked a freakish kung-fu style goal in mid-air.

But the Eagles had the answers when they slotted the next two goals through Jack Merrin and Needs. Up-and-coming youngster Will Moloney slotted the final goal of the term for Navarre to win the quarter, but they still trailed by 38 points at the final change.

Things became a bit heated in the final quarter and there were a number of skirmishes breaking out around the ground, but the umpires quickly threw the ball up and the players quickly realised that the ball was in play and got back to playing football.

But it was the Eagles that finished strongly to have a comfortable victory.

Hall showed his versatility around the ground but was not named in their better players. Jay McDonald, Bailey Goodwin, Bailey Wingrave and Needs played well as did Oscar Keogh and Joel Fisher who was lively up forward providing many leads. Needs and Merrin was credited with four goals apiece.

Navarre was well represented by Jack Jess, Baxter Cheesman, Sam Rickard, and Dante Lorusso, while Daniel Reading and Ollie Notting also played well for the Grasshoppers.

The Grasshoppers are at home next round to Trentham, while Dunolly will test just how strong they are when they tackle the reigning premiers at the home of the Lions.

Navarre’s young star Oliver Notting put in another good game.
