The Maryborough & District Triathlon Club conducted the fourth event on its 2022/23 calendar, a duathlon from the Princes Park precinct on Sunday, February 12.

The event was the duathlon involving a run, ride and run. Event distances were long course — 1.5 km run, 11 km cycle, and 1.5 km run, and short course — 200 m run, 5 km cycle, and 1.5 km run.

In the long course event it was Cooper Mark who set the early pace on the 1.5 km run with triathlon newcomers Will Coutts and Brandon Carter in hot pursuit, Adam Lowery, Emily Ryan, and the Mark Butler team were displaying strong running form as well.

Mark entered transition in first place, but with an outstanding transition Coutts was able to assume the lead as the cycle leg commenced.

All triathletes performed extremely well in the cycle leg maintaining their positions as they transitioned to the final leg, the 1.5 km run.

Although margins fluctuated between triathletes throughout the final leg, positions remained the same as they moved towards the finish line.

Coutts produced the fastest long course time of the day in his maiden club event to win the open male category in 32:57, Carter crossed the line in second place (35:16), and only seconds behind in third place (35:25) was Lowery.

Mark maintained strong form throughout to win the under 16 male long course category in the strong time of 33:40, Ryan produced an equally impressive performance (37:57) to win the 50+ female long course, and the Butler team won the open long course category (40:01).

In the short course it was Ella Govan that set a blistering pace throughout the event to cross the line in 22:42 to win the under 16 female category, and Kate Cain also enjoyed the Princes Park precinct course and duathlon format to win the open female category in 25:33.

The club is currently preparing to conduct its highly popular Kidz Triathlon from the Maryborough Sports & Leisure Centre and Jack Pascoe Reserve on Sunday, March 5.

The event is designed for newcomers (aged seven to 12 years old) to the sport and will involve a 25 m swim, 900 m cycle, and 400 m run.

Families with young budding triathletes keen to give the sport a go should mark this date in their diaries. Entry forms and further information will be made available later this month.
