A Dunolly man has escaped a collision with minor injuries after his vehicle collided with a tree on the Maryborough-Dunolly Road yesterday, before catching alight.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the Maryborough-Dunolly Road, Simson, just before 12 pm yesterday where a vehicle had collided with a tree.

The occupant of the vehicle, a 42-year-old Dunolly man, was able to escape with minor injuries, including cuts to his legs, before the vehicle caught on fire — with the blaze spreading to neighbouring trees and grassland.

The Maryborough and Carisbrook fire brigades, as well as firefighters from neighbouring brigades were on scene to extinguish the blaze while the man, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was taken to a Bendigo hospital for observation.

Central Goldfields Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Paul Schroeder said it was unclear what caused the incident and that it is being investigated.

“This is a case of someone who potentially should have reconsidered whether this trip was a necessity or not,” he said.

“I would suggest that the driver shouldn’t have been on the road in the first place, but that investigation is underway.”

Act Sgt Schroeder said the incident could have been worse and is a reminder for drivers to carefully consider whether they’re up to driving.

“Driving when you’re unwell or tired and not paying attention puts not only yourself but others at risk,” he said.

“It’s fortunate there were only minor injuries and it was only the driver involved, because if someone had have been coming along the other side of the road doing 100km/h, there would have been a very different result.”
