The party for the Highland Bowling Club went long into the night on Saturday as they celebrated taking out the division one and two premierships at Newstead.

Highland Bowls president Alan Muggridge was delighted to secure both wins on the day.

“It’s a great achievement for the club and all the members,” he said.

“It’s great to win in two different ways. I feel sorry for Carisbrook, they’ve been on top of division two for about four years now and haven’t been able to break through. Unfortunately, that’s the way it goes.

“The division one team hit their peak at the right time. What a team.

“I had three little speeches prepared, in case we won none, won one or won two.”

Muggridge paid tribute to the people behind the scenes that helped Highland become the dominant team of 2022/23.

“Things often get overlooked. The focus is normally on the players in the top teams, but there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes and a lot of work that has to get done. The players who aren’t in the Tartan teams supported us in an outstanding way,” he said.

“They go up and play for them as required and they take points off other teams, which helps Tartan. We always have to stay focused on Tartan as premiership contenders, but the other people make a big contribution too.”

There will now be one more game in the Goldfields Playing Area season, with today’s midweek final to be played at Avoca between those two rivals, Highland Tartan and Dunolly Blue.
