Maldon were too good for Dunolly on Saturday, winning by 74 points and all-but finishing the Eagles finals chances for 2023.

It was a disappointing way to finish the season off in front of a large crowd that returned for the 150th birthday celebrations for the Eagles.

Although the Eagles are still in the frame to play finals, they will need to beat Carisbrook next week — a difficult assignment in itself, given only undefeated Harcourt have managed to do so in 2023.

Maldon was quick to get on the scoreboard with the first two goals of the game inside four minutes through Cody Gunn and Rhys Ford.

Dunolly’s Joel Fisher answered shortly after, but Maldon had the upper hand and when Josh Pascoe goaled from the goal square after a free kick from a boundary throw in the Bombers led at quarter time by eight points.

Brodie Leonard-Shannon was unstoppable all day and when he kicked the first goal of the second term, he kick started the Bombers into attack mode and it was one way traffic, with the Bombers banging on four goals while holding the Eagles goalless. A highlight of the second term was a spectacular mark from Ash Woodman, but unfortunately his shot on goal hit the post.

Maldon again kicked the first two goals of the third quarter, but Joel Fisher stood up for the Eagles to kick three goals himself in this quarter for four goals for the game. The Eagles trailed by 32 points at the final break, but once Maldon kicked the first four goals of the final term, it was game over.

Maldon played youngsters Ryan Burchell and Noah Thompson and both boys showed they will be players of the future when they provided some great pieces of play throughout the game.

Maldon’s best players were Oliver Leonard-Shannon, Noah Thompson, Adam Robinson, Alex Farrow, Brodie and Seb Greene with four goals apiece to Brodie, Ford and Gunn.

Dunolly named their best players as Bailey Goodwin, Lachlan Tranter, Fisher, Riley Bouwmeester, Corey Bray and Seth Galvin.
