The Goldfields Playing Area got together at the Highland Society on Friday to hand over a cheque for $4176.50 to the Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) in the name of cancer research.
The donation was made as a result of their Charity Round which was held two weeks ago, and MDHS CEO Nickola Allan was on hand, along with club representatives across the district.
The funding will now go towards cancer research, in particular, the MDHS’ final stage for their mammography unit, according to Allan.
“What it means is that it finishes off the final piece for the purchase and installation of the mammography unit, which will mean we have local access to mammography for our community,” she said.
“It’s something that we’ve been striving and planning for many, many years, and to see the final part of the journey is amazing and the continued support of our community humbles me. I don’t think there’s many communities like ours.”
Allan was humbled by the support shown by the Goldfields Playing Area competition.
“It’s extraordinary. The fact that people put us front of mind and really investing in the community’s health is brilliant,” she said.
Allan says it’s another reason why residents can have peace of mind when seeking health benefits in the Central Goldfields Shire.
“If we have an opportunity to provide services locally, then that’s something that we should be doing. This is another example of what we’re looking at big picture to make sure that we can provide services locally for our community and stop people having to travel and increase our rates of screening,” she said.
