Carisbrook quashed Newstead’s dreams of making a significant ripple on the top four with a 10-goal victory, headlined by a dominant first half performance and a nine-goal haul from Anthony Zelencich.

In a clash pitting two top-four teams against one another, the Redbacks showed their class in the early stages, kicking five goals from 11 scoring shots to two goals from the Kangaroos to open up a 24-point lead after the opening stanza.

But it was the second quarter where the Redbacks really turned the wick up, kicking five goals to just three behinds to effectively end the contest, giving themselves a 52-point lead at the main break.

The Kangaroos did come out in the second half with intent to fight the game out, and they did just that in the third quarter, as they kicked four goals. However, the Redbacks added five more to extend their lead to 63 points at the final change.

The last quarter saw the Kangaroos run out the game well, and could have reduced their margin significantly. But from their nine scoring shots, they could only convert on three occasions, while Carisbrook kicked three goals of their own.

Zelencich’s nine-goal haul takes him to 64 goals for the season as his dream of being a centurion edges ever closer. Alongside him, Zak Rinaldi also put in a dominant performance, while Jackson Bowen, Harry Butler, Anden Lever and Adam Hurse were also in their best players.

Despite their first-half performance, Newstead will be pleased to an extent with the way they ran out the game, with Angus Mayes, Aidan McConachy, Rhys Smith, Anthony Robins, Oscar Lynzaat and Austin Peace named in their best.
