Digital driver licences are another step closer to reality in Victoria, with a trial now underway in Ballarat ahead of a state-wide rollout by 2024.
More than 2500 drivers in the town are now carrying digital licences on their mobile phones, with many more who have registered and will be added progressively.
The licences are stored on Service Victoria and VicRoads apps and according to Minister for Government Services Danny Pearson, the trial has so far been successful.
“The pilot is going well and we thank the residents of Ballarat for getting involved — more people are getting added by the day and their experience will help shape the statewide rollout,” he said.
“A digital driver licence makes it easier and more convenient for motorists and will help businesses and authorities to verify identity with minimum time and fuss.’’
Digital licences can be updated in real time to reflect changes to licence conditions, or change of address and has security features including an inbuilt dynamic hologram and refresh function.
They also automatically reveal if a licence has been cancelled or suspended — but can still be used to prove identity or age.
The licence also has a secure, timed QR code that can be scanned by businesses and other authorities to verify authenticity and prevent fraudulent use.
“Feedback from Ballarat locals will help make sure the digital licence is an optimum product to benefit everyone across Victoria,” Member for Ripon Martha Haylett said.
