Delivering joy to kids this Christmas, the Maryborough Community House (MCH) has partnered with students at the Maryborough Education Centre (MEC) for a gifting program.
‘Bags of Joy’ is an initiative that seeks to deliver gifts to young people in the community over the festive season.
“Kids get a hamper for Christmas — if they don’t have anything under the Christmas tree, they’ve at least got that gift on Christmas Day,” Maryborough Community House member Jo Cox said.
“The bag is filled with toys, it could be filled with deodorants, toothbrushes, toothpaste, books, or anything else depending on their age group.”
Ms Cox said doing this for local kids is an important way to give back to the community, and is also special for her personally.
“It gives me real joy in my heart to know that I’m helping someone that may never have anything under their Christmas tree,” she said.
“I know what it feels like, not being able to have something under the tree for my kids when they were young.
“I love seeing their faces, particularly the little ones, when they get their little bag of stuff. It’s pretty good.”
MCH is hoping to distribute the bags sometime next week along with pudding and Christmas cakes which will be provided by Bendigo Bank.
“It is really a partnership approach to help those in need over Christmas. Because it’s an expensive time of year and particularly with the cost of living going up, it really does make it a little bit harder,” Ms Cox said.
“It’s a fabulous way for the community to be able to help each other at this time of year and spread that Christmas cheer.”
