Dazzling audiences on the stage, young dancer Gretchen Semler impressed all at the Highland Gathering.
Gretchen, only seven years old, travelled from Mount Gambier, South Australia to compete in her first Highland Gathering in Maryborough on Monday.
“She’s amazing,” said her grandmother, Maryanne Turnor.
“She’s been competing in events all across South Australia, now we’ve come across to compete in Highland Gatherings in Hay, Daylesford and now here.”
The journey across the nation takes its toll on the pair, but the love of dancing has continued to drive them over the last four years. As the passion for Highland dancing ignited in Gretchen when she was only three and a half years old.
“We had friends involved in dancing so that’s how we knew about it. Gretchen showed up to a dance class one time and the love just kicked off from there,” Maryanne said.
Since then, Gretchen has continued to strive to enhance her skills.
“She’s working very hard with three classes a week, plus practice in her own time to keep improving,” Maryanne said.
The journey is only just beginning for Gretchen who is keen to show off her favourite dance, The Wilt, in future competitions.
“I’m always dancing. I love it lots,” Gretchen said.
