Daniher Drive stops by Avoca
FightMND’s record-breaking Daniher’s Drive rolled into Avoca on Friday to raise awareness and support urgent motor neurone disease (MND) research.
The annual fundraising road trip hosting a convoy of nearly 60 cars filled with over 220 people stopped in the Pyrenees town for morning tea organised by the Avoca Country Women’s Association at the Avoca RSL, a special ice bucket challenge with the Avoca Primary School and to experience what the local community has to offer.
“Avoca is a beautiful part of the world, we are so excited to be able to come out to the Pyrenees area,” FightMND campaigns director and daughter of co-founder Neale Daniher Bec Daniher said.
“We have always had incredible support from the regional communities and this is our opportunity to thank them for everything they have done.
“What makes the drive so memorable is the community events that we have along the journey, it’s coming in and having a chat with the locals.
“I can’t believe the hospitality we have had here, there is enough food to feed an army, we have been welcomed with arms wide open and we are very lucky to be here.”
Now in its eighth year, the four-day regional Victorian car rally raised a record figure of over $2 million for vital treatment and cure research as well as care initiatives.
While the fundraising trip ended over the weekend, Ms Daniher said the fight against MND continues.
“We come together for these four days to celebrate all of the achievements that we have been able to get, to thank the regional communities for their incredible support and to keep raising awareness for MND,” she said.
“MND is an insidious beast — the amount of stories we hear when we talk to people about their experience with MND, we need to find a way to stop it and that’s what this drive is about. We are trying to find a way to keep supporting the best and brightest so that one day if someone is diagnosed with MND we can say there’s a cure.”
