Maryborough’s former federal member along with a group of runners passed through town this week as they tackle a run from Canberra to Warrnambool as a fundraiser for a rare disease.

Member for Wannon Dan Tehan, along with the sizeable group, stopped by the Maryborough Railway Station Thursday morning before continuing on their almost 1000 kilometre journey.

The run, which left Parliament House last Saturday, aims to raise money to fight Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) — a rare condition that causes the brain to degenerate leading to dementia and death.

In Australia, around one person out of a million will develop CJD each year, with each of the runners personally impacted by the disease including Mr Tehan, who’s mother passed away from it.

“All of us taking part in this run have lost family members or friends to this cruel disease and that’s why we’re helping to raise money and awareness to break down the stigma attached,” he said.

So far around $60,000 has been raised as part of the fundraiser, with donations encouraged online at gofund.me/2816050a
