It was heartbreak for Maryborough Soccer Club as they were brought down by a last-minute goal in a 2-1 loss to Creswick.
With the game moved to a Friday night affair under lights at Doug Lindsay Oval, the blue and whites relished the opportunity to play a standalone game, and were rewarded in the early stages when a terrific run from Riley Gardam saw him slide a shot into the bottom left corner for the first goal of the game.
However, as time went on, Creswick started to take control of the game and possession, and were soon rewarded when a long shot from Nelson Grixti found its way into the back of the net for the equaliser before half time.
Creswick were enjoying much of the play and the territory, and were peppering the goals, but were unable to come up with the breakthrough.
Much of that was attributed by a strong performance from Bayden Macintyre in goal, while Neil Smyth and Garry George were also strong in contests.
With the score 1-1 at half time, both teams came out looking for a winner.
Creswick were still owning territory in Maryborough’s half, and were pushing hard for a winner, yet the blue and whites continued to hold strong, with Gardam enjoying a standout game on the right wing.
But in the very last moments of the game, Damien Saw was able to score from a free kick which broke Maryborough hearts.
Still, it was another good effort from Maryborough to open up the season as their added depth means they’ll be able to compete with teams for longer.
Maryborough will now have the bye before reconvening in two weeks time against Daylesford and Hepburn United.
