CAMPBELLS CREEK 12.9 (81) def MARYBOROUGH ROVERS 12.8 (80)
The battle of the Magpies took place at Campbells Creek on Saturday, and in a fight to see which team could win their first game of the season, it was Campbells Creek who won a thriller by one point.
Both teams have had a difficult season to date, but the Creekers were incredibly happy to finally break a 29-game losing streak, dating back to round 13, 2018, in wet slippery conditions.
It was Rovers that had the upper hand in the opening quarter and were very confident after leading by 14 points at quarter time, but Creek overran the visitors with a five goal to three second term to lead at half time by just two points.
Once again though Rovers gained the advantage in the third term and led by 10 points going into the final term.
In an extremely exciting final quarter Creek came from 16 points down with five minutes to go to get up by a solitary point to get off the bottom of the ladder for season 2022.
Rovers had the game in its keeping and instead of slowing play down and going to the boundary line, they rushed play and kicked the ball back through the middle which allowed Creek the opportunity to score in the dying stages.
Myles Whitney, Dylan Stevens, Kyle Gellatly, Matthew Manning, and Luke Manning were named as Creek’s best players with Whitney kicking three goals and Gellatly, Stevens and Joel Wootton kicking two apiece in the thrilling victory.
Rovers’ better players were Alex Mahony, Mitch Whelan, Andy Siekai, Nathan Leist and Kieran Johns with Whelan kicking six goals and Siekai kicking four goals in Rover’s heartbreaking loss.
