Central Goldfields Shire Council and Central Highlands Water (CHW) are once again encouraging the community to avoid single-use plastics.

Instead, Energy Breakthrough attendees are invited to use CHW’s drinking water fountains for their free water refills.

It’s part of an almost three decade collaboration between the local council and CHW which remains focused on reducing waste and promoting environmentally responsible choices.

It’s a success story council said diverted 2700 kilograms of waste from landfill in 2023 and again last year through recycling, composting, and waste-reduction initiatives.

It’s a milestone Central Goldfields Shire mayor Grace La Vella said will continue to improve with CHW’s help.

“We’re very much looking forward to going one better with our sustainability efforts this year and this wouldn’t be possible without the support of [CHW],” she said.

“We are grateful ... for their ongoing support.”

As part of this partnership, the drinking water fountains installed across Princes Park will remain year round.

CHW managing director Jeff Haydon said the initiative is part of their Choose Tap program, which encourages the community to avoid single-use plastics.

“Together, we’re helping the community stay hydrated and make sustainable choices that reduce waste and protect our environment,” he said.

“The Choose Tap program is a simple reminder that small actions, like refilling a bottle, can have a big impact.”
