Doran Earthmoving will take on the contract to reconstruct Maryborough’s Porter Avenue and Primrose Street — a project worth around $1.1 million.

At last month’s ordinary council meeting, councillors moved in favour of awarding the project to Doran Earthmoving Pty Ltd following a public tender process which closed on October 14, 2022.

According to the report tabled during the meeting, the council received two tender submissions which were further evaluated on the basis of their ability to manage risk, financial benefit to the council and community, capability and capacity — with local contractor Doran Earthmoving scoring highest against those factors while also submitting the lowest tender price.

Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Geoff Lovett moved that council award the contract to the company and said the company had an excellent portfolio of work.

“It’s pleasing to note that Doran, a local contractor, who have a well-learned reputation for quality projects, has won the tender for this job,” he said.

“I know these works will be greatly welcomed by the residents of that area. In my opinion, the intersection of Primrose and Porter Avenue is one of the worst in Maryborough. And sections of Porter Avenue are badly in need of reconstruction.

“I look forward to the contract being completed.”

The report states that the scope of work to be undertaken for the project includes renewal of the road pavement, kerb and channel, drainage and road surfacing.

Proposed works are funded in part through the Roads 2 Recovery Program, while the rest is funded through the council’s budget.

However, the report tabled during the meeting also notes that as a result of price increases in the construction sector, the tender is above the previous allocated budget for the project.

To accommodate this increase in price, council will source additional funding by reducing the range of works for another project — the renewal of Cotswold Road.

After evaluating all factors, Doran Earthmoving has been assessed to provide the best value to the council according to the report.

“We do know the quality work that Doran have done in the past on some of the other roads and this is a significant project,” Councillor Wayne Sproull said.

“This is great news for our community and residents.

“It’s great to see a local contractor be successful in the tender evaluation.”
