The Central Goldfields Shire Council invites tenders until 12 pm Monday for the design works and costings of the Bristol Hill Urban Bike Path.

While the bike path is at an early stage of development, its purpose is to provide a safe, off-road experience for the community. A council spokesperson said the bike path is designed for those who do not currently ride a bike to develop their skills and confidence on shared paths, roadways or mountain bike trails.

“It may include recreational family trails, toddler tracks, skills development tracks and mountain bike/BMX features,” they said.

The urban bike path is an evolution of the Urban Bike Park concept developed in 2017. In this concept the potential bike park would compliment the existing velodrome and clubhouse with the potential to include a space where people could learn to ride motorised scooters.

The 2017 strategy has a broader focus, whereas the Bristol Hill Urban Bike Path is more targeted to those wanting to learn or build confidence with cycling.

This addresses a key issue identified in the 2017 strategy where children are riding bikes to school less. The development’s goal is to establish a habit of active transport from a younger age with the hope this will continue as they get older.

The council’s spokesperson said the consultant will undertake investigations to aid in the project’s development alongside community input.

“It is expected that this will include schematic designs and indicative costings as well as strategic advice about its construction, operation and maintenance,” the council spokesperson said.

“This documentation will inform the next stage in the project and be used by council to seek funding to further progress the project.”

These tenders follow council previously receiving $30,000 in funding from tourism planning for the Bristol Hill Bike Park and putting out a tender for the Bristol Hill Urban Bike Park Master Plan early last year.
